The scientists have tested a broad array of the popular children’s toys called fidget spinners and have discovered an alarming amount of toxic contaminants that may prove deadly in the hands of children across America.

These toys are made of ballbearings and balanced blades to rotate, and are usually produced overseas in countries that do not implement strict quality controls. According to the researchers, these toys may contain dangerous amounts of lead if they are being imported from places like China.

This does not go for all fidget spinners, and this is a problem, since we cannot say which toys are impacted.

Unluckily, there is not a patent that prevents the production of the fidget spinners, and anyone can produce them everywhere in the world.

The advocates said the following:

Rubin is an independent advocate for prevention of lead poisoning and tested three fidget spinners at the beginning with an XRF instrument. The toys were sent to her by a friend. Two of the fidget spinners did not contain lead, but one had very high levels of lead and even some mercury. When she disassembled a fidget spinner with led lights, she discovered that there were both lead and mercury present. The amount of led she found was 19,000 parts per million (ppm) and the amount of mercury she found was 1,000 parts per million (ppm).

The amounts we just mentioned are alarming as scientists consider less than 90 ppm of lead to be safe threshold in children’s toys, Rubin says. However, only the paint on the led light spinner contained 334 ppm of lead and 155 ppm of mercury in one testing. The metal base that was not painted contained 1,562 ppm of mercury and 2,452 ppm of lead.

After this testing, Rubin tested six more fidget spinners and discovered that one fidget spinner from Yomaxer that costs $31 contained 42,800 ppm of lead. As Rubin points out, the ordinary consumers do not have access to an XRF instrument, especially knowing that their price is nearly $50,000. This is why the general advice Rubin gives to all people is to avoid fidget spinners available to buy on the market. Instead, she suggests that you should make your own fidget spinner. You can make yourself a fidget spinner out of legos.

Recently, 200,000 units of the popular fidget spinner toy were seized by EU customs officials because they failed to adhere to the health standards that the European Union has set.

All parents are advised to try and source the manufacturer of the product they are purchasing so that they will be able to determine whether the toys their children use and play with are safe for them.
