GMO Corn Plantings Lead To Death Of 37 Million Bees In Canada
The planting of the GMO corn in Ontario, Canada, caused the death of millions of bees few weeks ago. Scientists say that David Schuit’s loss of 600 hives containing about 37 million bees is the result of neonicotinoid pesticides that damage the bee’s immune system and navigation abilities and eventually lead them to death.
As Ontario’s journal The Post says, the mass death of the bees happened after GM corn seeds were planted in the vicinity. The crops were then sprayed with the “neonics” from the Bayer CropScience Inc., banned in countries of the European Union because they cause damage to useful pollinators. In North America, the chemical industry prevents the banning of neonics.
Schuit, the beekeeper from Elmwood, has stated to the reporters that the death of the millions of bees started once the corn was planted causing serious losses to his Saugeen Honey operation.
Nathan Carey, another local beekeeper and a member of the National Farmers Union, has also undergone a major bee loss on his farm. He believes that the direct cause of it is the neonics, which cause this type of damages around the world and not only in Ontario.
He stated for “The Post” that he plans to organize public workshops and panel discussions on the topic.
In the spring this year, right after the planting of GM corn, also in this region, Gary Kenny has lost 80% of his hives. Despite this genocide, the purveyor continues with their acts.
Air seeding of neonic-treated GM corn accelerating bee losses
The planting of these crops has become a problem with great consequences in the last year because of the new technique that exposes bees to much higher level of neonics. After being treated with neonics, the GM corn seed are then sprayed in the soil by “air seeders”, spraying all the pesticide in the air.
When exposed to these pesticides, bees are experiencing neurological damage that triggers the symptoms of colony collapse disorder (CCD). There are many studies that confirm this, one of them being the one made by researchers from American Purdue University who learned that:
“Analyses of dead bees revealed traces of thiamethoxam/clothianidin, which was causing the neurotoxic symptoms. One of the main sources of the aforementioned compounds is the seed treatments of field crops.”
Schuit says continued use of neonics is ‘criminal’
Researchers from the Harvard school of Public Health in May revealed even more evidence that bees are killed by these neonics by observing that bees abandon their hives mostly in winter and turn up dead. Two types on neonics are now implemented: clothianidin and imidacloprid.
“this study demonstrates that neonicotinoids are responsible for triggering CCD in bee hives that were healthy before winter came” said the lead author Chensheng (Alex) Lu, a professor of environmental exposure biology at HSPH.
Despite all the losses, which do not stop, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) does not take anything in particular to solve this problem. This, according to Schuit, is pure criminality.
“I think this whole situation is criminal, and we’re losing the faith because it doesn’t look like they’re going to do anything”, said he in The Post.
