A village in Italy has maybe the greatest number of the longest-living residents. Namely, every tenth resident in this village lives over a hundred years. You probably wonder what the secret to their longevity is. The answer to this question is – nothing but consumption of healthy food.

Recently, a group of scientists spent six months investigating why the residents in the Acharoli village, which is situated 145 kilometers south of Naples, Italy, live so long. They have discovered that these people stick to a very healthy diet and that even older people are still greatly sexually active. Unlike the rest of the Western world, these people have developed strong immunity against heart disease, dementia, and other conditions linked to age.

Official statistics shows that 81 person in the village exceeded one-century life. Antonio Vassallo, who is one hundred years old explains that the longevity and the good health they have is mainly achieved thanks to the Mediterranean diet based on olive oil, fish, and fresh fruit and vegetables.

He says that he and his ninety-three-year old wife Amina eat only healthy food. She also adds that they consume great amounts of fish and other fresh products. Also, most of the fresh fruits and vegetables they consume are produced by themselves. They have their own chickens, rabbits, and use only local products. They also produce olive oil and use it on a regular basis.

Acharoli belongs to the coastal area Cilento, a large, non-industrial area of outstanding natural beauty, which now has the status of a protected national park. The leader of the project, Alan S. Mejsel, a cardiologist from San Diego, concluded that the longevity of these people lies in a set of factors, such as frequent consumption of rosemary and active lifestyle imposed by the steep streets in the village.

Mejsel wondered if there was something in the genes of the people living here that combined with something they do, makes them healthier and prolongs their life. He noticed that they consume home-grown rosemary on a daily basis and suspected that maybe this is what contributed to their longevity somehow. It is a known fact that rosemary improves the function of the brain. Furthermore, these people are physically active, and all of them either walk, either fish, or they work in their gardens, meaning that they are active every day.

80 older people, including 25 centenarians participated in this study.
