Why You Should Never Eat Tilapia
One of the most popular fish in the USA is tilapia. However, this information is concerning if we consider the fact that this type of fish can be pretty dangerous and can lead to various illnesses and diseases.
The trouble with tilapia is that these fishes are kept in conditions where they do not feet naturally. When in the wild, tilapia eats lake plants and algae. But, when kept on a farm, tilapia fish eats soy pellets and GMO corn. Also, farmed tilapia does not contain healthy fish oil, and this is one of the many reasons it is not good for our health. The tilapia sold in the USA is treated with hormones, and this goes for almost all of the tilapia on the market. The farmers that breed this fish usually use a drug called 17alpha-methyltestosterone. This hormone drug is given to the fish so that the producers get more male fish which are heavier and produce more meat in a shorter time.
Farmed fish in general contain less Omega-3 fatty acids and more fat because they swim in a very limited area. They have access to food almost all the time, and contains increased levels of omega-6, a compound that causes inflammation in our body. There have been a lot of studies that have confirmed that tilapia that has been raised on farms has increased concentration of dioxin, PCBs, as well as many other contaminants which cause cancer. Farmed fish also contain huge amounts of contaminants. As researchers say, when we eat farmed fish, we increase our risk of developing cancer. Farmed fish, including farmed tilapia contain a very small amount of nutrients. In other words, what is the benefit of eating farmed fish?
A great number of people try to eat more fish because they want to increase the intake of healthy nutrients. Unluckily, this is not happening when they eat farmed fish. Even the amount of proteins is low in this type of fish.
Farmed fish is higher in dioxin compared to wild fish, even 11 times higher. Dioxin is a highly toxic chemical that can add to the development of numerous illnesses and diseases, including cancer. When our body encounters dioxin, it needs a lot of time to eliminate it. Its half-life is between 7 and 11 years.
We recommend that you try and find fish that has not been grown on a farm. Also, make sure that the fish you consume was grown in good sanitary conditions and under good regulations. Do what is best for your health and the health of your family.
