It would be nice if Americans followed the example of the Sweden book when it comes to recycling their waste.

Sweden, one of the Scandinavian states has set a new standard in the world of recycling its trash, with an almost zero waste amount of 99 percent. Sweden was already on the top back in 2012 when they were recycling 96 percent of their waste, but this three percent leap for a period of three years only is rather impressive.

Sweden is Now Recycling 99 Percent of its Trash. Here’s how

What’s the secret of this state? Their recycling policy is strict and aggressive, and there is an order of importance set: prevention, reuse, recycling, recycling alternatives, and as a last resort, dumping in landfill. The results from 2014 show that only one percent of their trash has ended up in a landfill that year.

People in Sweden are highly aware of the fact that producing less waste to begin with is crucial to lowering the amount of trash that ends up being dumped. They use some simple methods and objects like reusable containers for water and drinks, and these help to a great extent in lowering the amount of trash each person produces on a yearly basis.

Sweden’s system of trash separation is really superior, and this makes it easy to recycle next to everything that has been thrown away.

A great amount of the left over waste is taken care of by using “recycling alternatives”, including the waste-to-energy program. Details about this program are given in the video attached.

Even though the ‘recycling alternative’ remains controversial, it is a much cleaner method than drilling for oil for example, or drilling for natural gas to burn in the conventional power plants.

Sweden’s capacity for recycling trash is so advanced, that they are actually planning on importing 800,000 tons of garbage from other European countries in order to create heat for its citizens using the waste-to-energy program.

The USA should pay attention to this process, taking in consideration the fact that we only recycle around 34 percent of the trash we throw away.
