USDA approves slaughterhouses producing horse meat for human consumption

In case you are still not used to it, and you probably aren’t, you would need to start thinking about getting used to eating horse meat. This is due to the fact that the U.S. government just approved of the operation of horse meat slaughterhouses to produce meat for people to consume.

The USDA is expected to approve of horse meat plants in New Mexico, Iowa, and Missouri, as well as some other regions. Technically, horse meat cannot be legally sold in the U.S. and people cannot consume it, however, it may turn up in the US food supply, as it can be sold in Mexico. There, in Mexico, it can be re-labeled and then shipped back to the USA as a cheap meat filler. Where do these horses come from?

During the administration of Bush, the horse meat slaughterhouses were banned. However, in 2011, when president Obama replaced President Bush, horse meat slaughterhouses were restarted.

According to Reuters, about 130,000 horses are slaughtered each year in Canada and Mexico, and it seems the United States wants an enormous chunk of that business, as well.

Here is a not-that-interesting fact: the majority of horse meat comes from horse owners who decide to have their horses killed for different reasons, including illness, injury, or simply because they cannot afford to keep their horses fed and cared of anymore.

Numerous of these owners sell their horses to slaughterhouses for an unbelievably low price. In other words, they let strangers to haul their horses away to a meat packing plant just to be slaughtered mercilessly around several other screaming horses.
